British mag Supersweet says “The musical vehicle of multi-instrumental New York songwriter Lindsay Powell, Cake Bake Betty’s music is an exercise in both the beautiful and the bizarre. Inspired predominantly by old mariner songs, folk classics and blues standards amongst many other influences, the tracks have an off-kilter appeal and energy which most artists would struggle to replicate.”

Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders are back with a scorching slab of black vinyl that will take you back to a time when punk was punk. Volume 3 in our “ECONOLINE” 7″ series is “Killin’ Machine” by Denney and the Jets.  This is their first vinyl release and its a real hell of a slab!  You may recognize “Pain Pills” from our spring MP3 sampler or if you got one of the 100 copies of Denney’s cassette “Devil’s Harvest” that is now sold out.  These are hand numbered and stamped in an edition of 350!

Incredible fat warm recording of an as-then high point performance by the brothers Orrall. They’ve dressed it up a bit in a white sleeve with hand-glued xerox, with an additional plastic outer sleeve. Here’s the setlist: U Got The Look, Heavy Damage, Mellow Out, I’m a Freak, Heavy Days, Shredder, Bone Jam, Dreamscape, The Tropics, Mind Ride, Beastmaster 420. Played by JEFF The Brotherhood, Produced by Jack White, Recorded by Vance Powell, and enjoyed by all.

“The Brotherhood Of Light” is a collection of previously released but out of print odds and ends. There is Side One (21:40) and there is Side Two (22:45). There is no silence. Black vinyl.

On October 18th, 2011, JEFF The Brotherhood were joined by William Tyler (Tompkins Square), Loney Hutchins (Cleft Records) and Joey Plunket in recording Volume 3 of the Upstairs at United series. Each song in this session was recorded in a single take direct to ¼ inch tape then cut at 45 RPM for the ultimate listening experience.

JEFF The Brotherhood, the sibling duo of Jake & Jamin Orrall show their prog rock side on this recording. While the recording consists of only three songs those songs totalled enough time that they rocked out until they literally ran out of tape (as can be heard at the end of ”In Space No One Can Hear You Scream, Part II’).’ While traditionally a two piece, JEFF The Brotherhood, was joined in this session by William Tyler on guitar, Loney Hutchins on keys and crazy space sounds, and Joey Plunket on bass. The recording features an 11 minute version of tour favorite ”I’m A Freak” (Wicked Lady), an 11 minute cover of Hawkwind’s ”Master Of The Universe” and the 8 minute improvisational jam ”In Space No One Can Hear You Scream”.

(The album, not the jewel case)  The brothers Orrall have tightened up their sound into something thicker and more cohesive while stepping further away from the looser, more psychedelic sound of Heavy Days, and in the process have stumbled into a sound that beautifully captures the aimless days of summertime. But really, that’s to be expected from an album that opens with the line, “I want a place where I can smoke meats, where I can drink and swim in the creek.” That feeling carries on into “Sixpack,” which will immediately speak to anyone who has ever been to a way-too-packed, small-town house party.  Hypnotic Nights delivers all of the brilliant power pop worship that we’ve come to love from JEFF the Brotherhood, and if the album isn’t able to kick off your summer, nothing will.

Fiesta Red Records’ Rob Seidenberg and executive producer Gary Burnette have teamed up to release Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe. The album’s proceeds will benefit both the Nashville Rising Fund and the Central Texas Wildfire Fund. We are pretty psyched to score a few of the LP’s (rumor has it it’s a run of 300, but we’re not sure), and JEFF The Brotherhood fan’s will find a lot to love here, including great performances from Caitlin Rose and Robert Ellis. Be it “Stones-y” or “stoner” or whatever, it’s still the raw rock and roll that you can’t find anywhere else right now. And in that same vein, 1971 is like a real album. It’s not a bunch of songs thrown together or a bunch of singles collected onto one LP, it’s a record that’s meant to be heard in it’s entirety and taken in as a whole.”

X File is a record for and about everything around in Nashville since I moved here in 2006. Ben Todd of Nashville’s Dead, Dillon “Angel Baby” Watson of D. Watusi, and Wez Traylor of Natural Child and MEEMAW play on it. Their science keeps me honest; the truth is way, way, out there.”

“If you’re over 40, you may well survey the disaffected youth of today from behind a twitched curtain and sweepingly state that what they need is no haircut and a spell in the peace corps. Good news for you, if you take that view: The Paperhead are a trio of 18-year-olds from Nashville who, unlikely as it may seem, take their name from a lyric in My Clown by late 60s UK psych oddfellows July. The Priestess metal frontman took a rad left turn into Uncle Bad Touch, his crazy garage-alt side band. Between I Wanna Love You – with bassist Kathryn McCaughey cackling the lyrics over Heppner’s crunchily attenuated lines – and Baby Baby Baby Baby, they crammed more retro-prog ideas into 2:58 than a dozen Nuggets bands. Strange City Sing To Me ranks as an early Osheaga highlight. Mikey, with his new wave haircut and vintage Harmony Bobkat, likes ragged melody lines in a tight frame, and originality. The range is extensive and ramshackle – could’ve been the band opening for Pavement or QOTSA or a Clash/Sham 69 show in ’78. Crazy good.” (MONTREAL GAZETTE)
